![]() ![]() ![]() As an officer came to arrest her, putting her in handcuffs and escorting her to a police car, Singleton thought about her son and daughter-ages ten and fifteen-who were expecting to see their mom after school. “Well, right now I don’t feel like the victim,” Singleton responded. “You’re the victim,” Mitchell replied, according to Singleton. (His office, he claimed, had visited her house and place of employment on numerous occasions, hoping that she would talk.) The next day, as promised, Singleton met with an assistant district attorney, Arthur Mitchell, who questioned her about her evasiveness and pressed for details on the domestic-violence incident. While the officers were at Singleton’s home, a friend who worked in law enforcement arrived and told the officers, “Don’t do this! The kids are in the house-you’re going too far!” She promised to escort Singleton to the D.A.’s office in the morning, after arrangements could be made for the children. (Singleton told me that she had planned to appear in court she’d ignored two previous subpoenas left in her door, which were improperly served.) The D.A.’s office was using an arcane tool of the law-a little-known but highly consequential instrument called a “material witness” statute-to jail Singleton until she testified in court about the cell-phone incident. Now, the cops had a warrant to arrest Singleton because, according to the D.A.’s office, she had dodged the office’s attempts to serve her a subpoena or contact her by phone according to Singleton, a prosecutor wanted to interview her about the alleged crime in private and had deemed her an uncoöperative victim. Her ex faced charges of “simple battery and criminal damage to property less than 500 dollars,” and prosecutors wanted Singleton to testify against him in court. (She’d left the relationship in the meantime.) Still, the D.A.’s office pressed ahead. Later, Singleton told the district attorney’s office that she wasn’t interested in pursuing charges. The cops had arrived and arrested the boyfriend. But, six months earlier, she’d called the cops after her then boyfriend, in a jealous fit, grabbed her cell phone and smashed it she’d feared for her safety. Singleton had not committed-nor even been accused of-a crime. Singleton stepped outside to join the officers and recalls one of them explaining, “The district attorney’s office called us to come and pick you up tonight.” The officers had a warrant to arrest Singleton and take her to the Orleans Parish Prison. “Can we speak to you away from your kids?” one of the cops asked. She was surprised when two uniformed police officers knocked on the door. Singleton, a polite, bespectacled woman in her mid-thirties, who kept the books for a local New Orleans charter school, intended to have a quiet evening with her three children. One night in May, 2015, an accountant named Renata Singleton arrived home from work and changed into lounge pants.

As the external finishing material of the roof, natural slate was constructed to surpass the elaborate design plan and settle patterns while creating it. The ceiling with a wavelike structure was produced by installing the metal frame while avoiding the existing timber construction. ![]() It was intended to lay it similarly to the uneven wood and make it balanced with how it used to look. The original rafters were maintained while plywood was covered in layers over it for the construction. ![]() The doors of the storage in the rafter and servants’ quarters, which have been around for 50 years, were maintained to preserve the exquisiteness of time, and the flat stones that used to be in the main building were used as landscape stones in the yard. The yard has an open view towards the east, so it was a breezy path. The servants’ quarters block out views from the road and it also functions as a wall to adequately protect the house. The servants’ quarters can be the first impression of the house met from the street and it was designed in a way so that it can be used as a guest space. The servants’ quarters that used to be used as storage only needed a room and a bathroom, so attractive texture and traces could be kept as they used to be. Accordingly, white walls were installed on both sides of the living room and the kitchen and with a high ceiling height. The rafters on the previous ceiling were maintained and plywood was placed over them to install the insulating material. The living room and kitchen of the main building were arranged in the connected area of the ㄱ shaped space, and 2 rooms were designed on both ends. In the main building that used to have 3 rooms, one of the rooms was remodeled into a part of the living room, and since windows were designed for lighting, it was difficult to maintain how it used to look. The arrangement was vitalized while changes were made in the construction. Old houses each have different shapes and the ㄱ shaped main building and the ㅡ shaped servants’ quarters are arranged in a ㄷ shaped form by surrounding the yard. I contemplated what to empty out, set aside, and cover-up. ![]() It's difficult to gauge how prevalent forced ranking is, particularly because companies have started using more anodyne terms like "talent assessment system" or "performance procedure". This may result in hiring lower-caliber candidates than the “C” employees they are replacing, thus actually bringing the overall quality of resources at the organization down. ![]() If the workload is already high, and the workforce is reduced further due to this vitality curve, then the hiring managers will be under pressure to hire candidates as soon as possible to manage the workload. Simply “working harder” is an unreliable strategy for obtaining good ratings if everyone is doing it. This incentive grows over time as sub-par talent is removed, since it becomes increasingly difficult for good employees to obtain good ratings. This helps to fill the quota of “C” rankings, and makes themselves rank better. It is in the individual's personal interest to seek out candidates skilled enough to retain their job, but not skilled enough to excel. The personal impact of adding excellent coworkers is more competition at the “A” end of the curve. The vitality curve creates incentive for employees involved in hiring of peers to avoid the best candidates. This creates an incentive for the employee to refuse promotions. If the performance based rewards prior to promotion exceed the raise accompanying the promotion, the promotion is an overall reduction in compensation. But due to higher expectations, the employee may become “B” rated. When promoted to the next level, they continue to perform at their exemplary level. For example, consider an employee who is “A” rated at their current job level. When the rewards given to “A” players are significant, accepting a promotion has added risk. When broad-based stock compensation is the norm, avoiding perverse incentives can be difficult. However, if such rewards become a meaningful portion of “A” player's overall compensation, it can lead to perverse incentives, especially if the rewards of being an “A” player are predictable and recurring, such as a normal part of the annual review process. Welch advises firing "C" players, while encouraging "A" players with rewards such as promotions, bonuses, and stock options. Procrastination is a common trait of "C" players, as well as failure to deliver on promises. They are likely to "enervate" rather than "energize", according to Serge Hovnanian's model. On the other hand, the "C" players are nonproducers. The vital "B" players may not be visionary or the most driven, but are "vital" because they make up the majority of the group. The " Edge" to make difficult decisions. Can Energize others around common goals. Can make business productive and enjoyable at the same time.Possess charisma, the ability to energize themselves and others.Blessed with much "runway" ahead of them.Welch admitted that the judgments were "not always precise".Īccording to Welch, "A" players had the following characteristics: Specifically, top executives were divided into "A", "B", and "C" players. In his 2001 book Jack: Straight from the Gut, Welch says that he asked "each of the GE's businesses to rank all of their top executives". In some cases such "80-20" tendencies do emerge, and a Pareto distribution curve is a fuller representation. The often cited "80-20 rule", also known as the " Pareto principle" or the "Law of the Vital Few", whereby 80% of crimes are committed by 20% of criminals, or 80% of useful research results are produced by 20% of the academics, is an example of such rankings observable in social behavior. The other 10% ("bottom 10") are nonproducers and should be fired. The "top 20" percent of the workforce is most productive, and 70% (the "vital 70") work adequately. The vitality model of former General Electric chairman and CEO Jack Welch has been described as a "20-70-10" system. Numerous companies practice it, but mostly covertly to avoid direct criticism. Pioneered by GE's Jack Welch in the 1980s, it has remained controversial. It is also called stack ranking, forced ranking, and rank and yank. Performance management approach to rank employeesĪ vitality curve is a performance management practice that calls for individuals to be ranked or rated against their coworkers.
